Thiago Alcantara has been appointed as part of Hansi Flick’s backroom staff at Barcelona following his retirement from football this summer.
Thiago called time on his career after leaving Liverpool at the end of last season with the Spaniard having struggled with fitness issues in recent campaigns.
The 33-year-old featured for just five minutes during an injury-hit 2023-24 Premier League campaign and announced his retirement on X earlier this month.
“I will always be willing to give back what I have been given and I am grateful for the time I have enjoyed it. Thank you, football. And to all who accompanied me and made me a better player and person along the way. See you soon, Thiago.”
Thiago will now link up with former club Barcelona as part of the coaching staff under new head coach Hansi Flick. The Spaniard played under Flick during a decorated career at Bayern Munich, winning a Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League treble in 2019-20.
Thiago had come through the ranks at Barcelona and made 101 appearances for the Catalans before his transfer to Bayern in 2013. Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Thiago will join up with Barcelona for the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.
