Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth has called Leny Yoro one of the most exciting young defenders in world football after the club completed the £52m signing of the centre-back.
United have beaten competition from some of Europe’s leading clubs to land Yoro, with Real Madrid, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain all credited with interest.
The 18-year-old made 44 appearances in all competitions for Lille last season, scoring three goals, and was named in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season for 2023-24.
The France u-21 international has signed a long-term deal with the Red Devils and becomes the club’s second signing of the summer transfer window, after the £34m capture of Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna.
Ashworth, who joined the club from Newcastle earlier this month, believes Yoro has all the attributes to become one of the best defenders in the game.
“Leny is one of the most exciting young defenders in world football; he possesses every attribute needed to develop into a top-class centre-back,” Ashworth told the club’s official website.
“Having had such an excellent start to his career, we are excited to support him in reaching his immense potential here at Manchester United.
“This club has a fantastic record of developing young players, whether homegrown or brought in from elsewhere, and giving them the required guidance, time and patience to grow and flourish. Under Erik ten Hag and our excellent staff we will ensure that Leny has the perfect platform to achieve the success that everyone across the club is aiming for.”
