PSG lead Premier League teams in race for €120m midfielder

Paris Saint-Germain are advancing in talks with Benfica to sign midfielder Joao Neves with the French champions ahead of Premier League clubs in the race to sign the teenager.

Neves is one of the most coveted talents in Europe following a standout season in Portugal, where the 19-year-old made 55 appearances in all competitions and was named in the Primeira Liga Team of the Year.

The teenager was named Primeira Liga Midfielder of the Month on five occasions in 2023-24 and earned inclusion in the Portugal squad for Euro 2024. He has already won nine caps for the national team at senior level.

Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City have all been linked with Neves, who has a release clause of €120m (£101m) in his contract at The Estádio da Luz.

However, Premier League clubs face disappointment with PSG leading the race and Fabrizio Romano has revealed the player ‘wants the move’ to Paris.

Neves could link up with Portugal teammates Nuno Mendes, Danilo, Vitinha and Goncalo Ramos at the Parc de Princes, as PSG advance in negotiations over a transfer.

The Ligue 1 side will be hoping to agree a fee lower than Neves’ release clause as PSG look to make a statement following the departure of Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid.
