Arsenal are not prepared to give up on their pursuit of Nico Williams as the Gunners look to make a statement signing.
Williams was one of the stars of this summer’s European Championship and produced a man-of-the-match performance in Spain’s final win over England. The 22-year-old scored the opening goal of the Euro 2024 final to cap a brilliant individual tournament.
Arsenal are among the player’s admirers with Mikel Arteta keen on a deal for Williams, who has a release clause in the region of £46m in his contract at Athletic Bilbao.
Barcelona are leading the race to sign the Spain international and have been vocal in their interest, though GiveMeSport are reporting that Arsenal remain in the running.
The North London side want to add to their wide options to ease the burden on Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, with Williams the top target to improve the Arsenal forward line.
The winger scored eight goals and provided 19 assists in all competitions for Athletic Bilbao last season and formed part of the team that ended a 40-year trophy drought with Copa del Rey success.
Arsenal have completed just one major signing so far after turning David Raya’s loan from Brentford into a permanent deal, while a deal is almost in place to bring in Italy centre-back Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna.
