Chelsea duo left out of pre-season tour as exits loom

Trevoh Chalobah and Alfie Gilchrist have been left out of Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the United States as the defensive duo look to secure moves away from the club.

Chelsea have informed Chalobah that he does not feature in the club’s plans this season, with the decision made following the arrival of Tosin Adarabioyo from Fulham.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Chelsea have made the ‘tough decision’ on Chalobah’s future as the Blues feel they have adequate cover in central defence with Axel Disasi, Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill and Benoit Badiashile all currently options in Enzo Maresca’s squad.

Chalobah was subject of a £25m approach from Nottingham Forest last summer but turned down the move to fight for his place at Chelsea. The academy graduate missed the opening months of the season injured but returned to impress across the run-in as Chelsea secured European qualification.

The 25-year-old has various admirers in the Premier League with Fulham and Crystal Palace heavily linked, while Tottenham and Manchester United have kept tabs on his situation at Stamford Bridge.

Gilchrist has also been left at home, though the defender’s exit from Chelsea will be on loan. Championship clubs Preston North End and Sheffield United have made approaches to take the 20-year-old on loan for the 2023-24 campaign.
