Arteta sees vision of Slot’s Liverpool after friendly defeat

Mikel Arteta said he can see the ‘idea’ behind Arne Slot’s Liverpool team after Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to the Reds in Philadelphia.

Arsenal lost to their Premier League rivals on their pre-season tour of the United States, as the two teams went head-to-head in front of a record crown in Philadelphia for a football game.

Arsenal and Liverpool finished second and third in the Premier League respectively last season and Arteta got a first look at his side’s potential title rivals in 2024-25.

Liverpool are under new management following Jurgen Klopp’s decision to step down at the end of last season, with former Feyenoord coach Arne Slot having taken charge at Anfield.

Arteta said Slot’s tactical approach is ‘clear’ and believes Liverpool are ‘looking good’ during their pre-season preparations.

“We all have to start competing and earn our right to show how good we are but yes, the team is looking good in the games that I’ve watched in pre-season,” Arteta said on Liverpool in his post-match press conference.

“It’s clear the idea that he wants to implement and it was a tough game for us.

“There are certain differences and every coach has their touch. There are certain individuals with very particular characteristics that makes the team as well. One is the style of play and then it’s the DNA of certain players that always leave their stamp on a team. You can see what he’s doing.”

Arteta was asked for his view on the record attendance at the Lincoln Financial Field, as 69,879 fans packed in to watch the fixture.

“It’s a beautiful stadium. I think it created a very good atmosphere. You felt that it was something that you play for, it wasn’t just a friendly and I’m really thankful and grateful for all the people that turned up and hopefully they are happy with the show that they have seen.”
