Liverpool believe striker signing can be made for £58.9m

Liverpool are interested in signing Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon, according to reports in Portugal.

Gyokeres exploded onto the radar of Europe’s top clubs after scoring 43 goals and providing 15 assists in all competitions for Sporting in 2023-24.

The Swedish striker joined the Portuguese side from Coventry City last summer before producing a spectacular first season in a top-level European league.

According to O Jogo, Liverpool are looking at Gyokeres to bolster their forward line. Darwin Nunez has struggled to completely convince since his arrival from Portuguese football in 2022, while Cody Gakpo’s impressive performances in a wide role at Euro 2024 suggest his future is on the flanks. Diogo Jota offers an alternative option for new head coach Arne Slot at centre-forward.

Gyokeres has a release clause of £100m (£84m) in his contract at Sporting but the Reds are reportedly confident that Sporting will sell for less. There is belief from Liverpool that a fee of €70m (£58.9m) will be enough to convince the Primeira Liga champions into a sale.

Arsenal also like Gyokeres and have placed him on their shortlist of options at centre-forward but have been put off by the player’s price tag, according to Fabrizio Romano.
