Newcastle make first move for England defender

Newcastle United have approached Crystal Palace to discuss a potential deal to sign England centre-back Marc Guehi.

Eddie Howe is desperate to strengthen his centre-back options ahead of the new campaign and the Magpies have opened talks with Palace to understand their demands for the defender.

Guehi’s reputation is on the rise after three solid seasons in the Premier League at Palace and an eye-catching Euro 2024 campaign with England. The 24-year-old earned an opportunity in the side due to Harry Maguire’s injury and impressed as Gareth Southgate’s side reached the final.

A number of top clubs in England and Europe have courted the ex-Chelsea youngster but Newcastle are the first to firm up their interest with an approach, according to The Athletic.

Palace are reluctant to lose the player but may feel now is the time to capitalise on Guehi’s stock, with his contract set to expire in 2026 and no indication that he is prepared to sign a new deal.

Newcastle’s need for centre-backs comes with Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman sidelined with ACL issues. The Magpies had hoped to sign Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer from Fulham but missed out on the defender to Chelsea. Lloyd Kelly has arrived from Bournemouth on a free and can operate centrally and at left-back.
