Leicester leading race for out-of-favour Chelsea star

Leicester City are leading the race to sign David Datro Fofana from Chelsea with the forward expected to leave Stamford Bridge on loan.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan spells at Union Berlin and Burnley, struggling to make an impact with the former before moving to the Clarets in January.

He scored four goals in 10 league starts for Burnley in the Premier League but was unable to help the club to top-flight survival.

Leicester are now interested in a deal to sign Fofana having seen Kelechi Iheanacho depart for Sevilla on a free transfer this summer.

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that the newly-promoted Foxes are leading the race for the striker’s signature, though there is rival interest from Bundesliga Champions League qualifiers Stuttgart and Spanish side Villarreal. The loan move could include a possible obligation-to-buy clause, with Chelsea open to a permanent sale.

Fofana signed for Chelsea from Molde in January 2023 but has made just four senior appearances for the West Londoners.

Chelsea want to sign a centre-forward this summer but the Blues are looking to offload Fofana, Romelu Lukaku and Armando Broja before stepping up efforts to sign a number nine.
