Manchester United have not given up hope of signing Youssouf Fofana as the club look to sign a midfielder this summer.
Fofana is a player the Red Devils have tracked closely with the France international expected to leave AS Monaco after entering the final 12 months of his contract.
The 25-year-old had agreed personal terms on a transfer to AC Milan but the two clubs have been unable to find a compromise on the final fee.
The situation has opened the door for Premier League clubs with West Ham and Nottingham Forest having made approaches earlier in the summer.
Sky Sports are reporting that Manchester United are back in the race for Fofana as Erik ten Hag looks to reinforce his engine room. Fofana is viewed as a cheaper alternative to PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte after the Red Devils opted against meeting the €60m asking price of the French champions.
Burnley midfielder Sander Berge and Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi have also been named as potential options, though Liverpool are pressing ahead with plans to sign the latter. Zubimendi has a €60m release clause in his contract with the Spanish side.
United’s need for reinforcements comes after Sofyan Amrabat’s loan move from Fiorentina was not made permanent. There are also doubts over the futures of Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay with the latter subject of strong interest from Fulham.
