Chelsea setback as defender suffers fresh hamstring injury

Chelsea have been dealt a blow ahead of the new season after captain Reece James suffered a new hamstring injury.

James has been plagued with injury problems and started just five Premier League games during a disrupted 2023/24 campaign.

The defender has been a prominent part of pre-season preparations and started all five of Chelsea’s games during their tour of the United States, though felt ‘discomfort’ in his hamstring during training this week.

According to The Athletic, the injury has been described as ‘minor’ and the Blues can afford to take a patient approach to James’ recovery.

The 24-year-old is suspended for the opening three games of the new Premier League season after being sent off against Brighton towards the end of the previous campaign.

Chelsea also have Malo Gusto as an alternative with the Frenchman having had an impressive debut campaign in West London. Wesley Fofana has also returned from his own injury issues and can cover at right-back.
