Barcelona have no intention of selling Frenkie de Jong this summer despite speculation surrounding the midfielder’s future.
De Jong’s future continues to be a source of speculation due to Barcelona’s challenging economic situation. The Netherlands international has been mentioned as a potential sale to raise funds for transfer business, with Manchester United again linked with the 27-year-old.
United have a long-standing interest in De Jong and pushed to sign the midfielder in 2022. Erik ten Hag coached the player at former club Ajax and had been keen to reunite with De Jong in the Premier League.
The Red Devils are interested in signing a defensive midfielder before the transfer deadline and have again been linked with signing De Jong. However, Sky Germany are reporting that the Dutchman remains a part of Barcelona’s plans for the campaign.
Hansi Flick is ‘counting on’ De Jong for the 2024/25 season and holds the midfielder in ‘high regard’ as he begins his debut season in charge at the Camp Nou. De Jong is currently recovering from an ankle injury that saw him miss Euro 2024 in the summer.
The midfielder was absent for Barcelona’s season-opening win at Valencia this weekend, as Robert Lewandowski scored twice in a 2-1 win at The Mestalla. De Jong, contracted to Barcelona until 2026, is expected to return after September’s international break.
