Everton make approach to sign England defender

Everton have made an approach to sign Kieran Trippier on loan from Newcastle with the defender keen to leave St James’ Park before the deadline.

Trippier was an unused substitute for Newcastle’s 1-0 win over Southampton on the opening weekend as Eddie Howe opted for Tino Livramento at right-back. The former is keen to explore a transfer as he seeks guaranteed first-team football, with Howe expected to stick with the emerging Livramento as his first-choice option.

Everton are among the clubs interested in signing Trippier, according to The Athletic, with Sean Dyche having worked with the player at Burnley.

The Toffees are keen to strengthen at right-back before the deadline and are expected to formalise a loan approach before the deadline after initial talks.

Trippier is contracted at Newcastle until 2026 and was subject of interest from Bayern Munich in the January transfer window. There have also been approaches for the England international from the Saudi Pro League.

Trippier was the first signing made at Newcastle following the club’s Saudi-backed takeover after arriving from Atletico Madrid in a £12m deal. The full-back has been a popular figure at St James’ Park and provided 10 assists in the Premier League in 2023/24 – the best return of his club career.

A move to Everton would allow the Bury-born defender to move closer to his North-West roots.
