Arne Slot has said Liverpool have a ‘lot to prove’ despite a strong start to his reign at the club.
Liverpool are one of four teams with a perfect record in the Premier League after two games, after goals from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah sealed a 2-0 win against Brentford on Sunday.
The Reds are yet to concede a goal in the Premier League this season and have shown promising signs under the new head coach, including an electric opening goal on the counter-attack against Brentford.
However, Slot is refusing to get carried away and said his team have plenty to prove.
“Yes, it is [encouraging],” Slot said in his post-match press conference.
“Two good wins against difficult opponents because Brentford had a very good opening game last week, but there is still a lot for us to prove in the season coming up because I said it a few times already: I think both of the teams, Ipswich and Brentford, deserve our respect for the way they have played against us, but I am not expecting one of the two [to be] in the top six in the upcoming season so there is still a lot to prove for us. But it is always good to start off with two wins and two clean sheets.”
Liverpool’s opening goal was a brilliant move as Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Diaz led a lightning-quick counter-attack. Having cleared a defensive set-piece, Liverpool raced up the other end to open the scoring.
Asked for his view on the goal, Slot added: “It’s nice to inherit a team and individuals that are so special, and that’s what you saw in the first goal as well. I think Lucho finished it off really good, Mo won an important duel around the 18-yard box – because this is what the margins in football are, if he would have lost that duel they would have maybe got a shot on target.
“He won the duel and then we could counter-attack them and Diogo [Jota] made a great pass with the right timing, and a great run from Lucho and he finished it off really well.”
