Four uncapped players as Carsley names England squad

Lee Carsley has named his first England squad ahead of September’s UEFA Nations League fixtures with the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

Carsley has been placed in interim charge of the Three Lions following Gareth Southgate’s decision to step down as manager after Euro 2024. The 50-year-old has had success with England at u-21 level after guiding the side to u-21 European Championship in 2023.

Carsley had opted to include four uncapped players in his squad, with Tino Livramento, Noni Madueke, Morgan Gibbs-White and Angel Gomes each selected for the first time.

The quartet have all featured heavily for the head coach at u-21 level and join the senior set-up. Madueke scored a hat-trick in Chelsea’s 5-2 win at Wolves in the Premier League at the weekend.

Levi Colwill in the squad for next month’s fixtures, having also worked with Carsley in his previous role. Colwill, who has one senior cap, returns to the squad after being left out for Euro 2024.

Elsewhere, Jack Grealish makes his return after missing Euro 2024. The 28-year-old was a big-name omission from Southgate’s final selection and will be keen to make an impression during September’s break, after a challenging period at Manchester City. Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire also returns.

There’s no place for Arsenal defender Ben White, however, who ruled himself out of England contention under the previous regime. Despite the change of coach, there has been no change in White’s stance.
