Jamie Carragher has insisted that Chelsea ‘need a striker’ before the transfer deadline for Premier League clubs on Friday evening.
Premier League teams have until 11pm BST on August 30 to conclude deals for the summer window, with Chelsea pursuing a number nine in the final hours of the transfer period.
The West Londoners are locked in negotiations with Napoli for Victor Osimhen, though the player’s wage demands have proven problematic given the new salary structure at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea also face competition from Al-Ahli for Osimhen with the Saudi Pro League side having reached an agreement with Napoli on a £67m deal.
Ivan Toney is another option for Chelsea as the England forward looks to leave Brentford and Carragher believes the Blues ‘need’ to add to their options before the deadline.
Chelsea ‘need’ a striker – Nicolas Jackson ‘has clearly not worked’
“No doubt they need a striker. Nicolas Jackson has clearly not worked,” the ex-Liverpool defender told Sky Sports News.
“Osimhen has been a player linked to the Premier League for a long time. I would be delighted if he is coming – hopefully we can get to see him in the Premier League.
“But just like with Ivan Toney, he has a situation that he could go to Saudi. I can understand if heads get turned by the money on offer, but fingers crossed both Osimhen and Toney will be in the Premier League by the close of the window tonight.”
