Real Madrid make Ballon d’Or contender ‘top transfer priority’

Real Madrid have made the signing Manchester City midfielder Rodri the club’s top priority ahead of next summer’s transfer window.

Rodri has emerged as one of world football’s most influential midfielders during five seasons in the Premier League, where the 28-year-old has won four league titles and the Champions League among a wealth of honours.

The Spaniard as a key figure as the national team won Euro 2024 in the summer, with Rodri named as Player of the Tournament for his role in La Roja’s success.

According to Spanish outlet AS, Real Madrid want to add Rodri to their squad for next season as Luka Modric nears the end of his time with Los Blancos.

Having also seen Toni Kroos retire at the end of last season, Real Madrid view Rodri as a marquee arrival to serve as the midfield conductor.

Rodri began his career at Villarreal before a single-season spell at Atletico Madrid, where his performances persuaded Pep Guardiola to spend £62m on his signature in 2019.

He is regarded as one of the favourites for the 2024 Ballon d’Or, having won Player of the Tournament accolades in the Champions League, Club World Cup, UEFA Nations League and European Championship over the last 18 months. Rodri is contracted to Manchester City until 2027.
