England host Finland in the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday evening as the Three Lions look to build on a promising start under new interim head coach Lee Carsley.
Declan Rice and Jack Grealish scored first-half goals as England’s Nations League campaign began with a 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland. England impressed during a dominant first half in Dublin, with the second goal a well-worked team move.
Carsley has said that result has provided him with self-confidence for the England role. The 50-year-old has stepped up to replace Gareth Southgate on an interim basis after the latter’s decision to leave after Euro 2024.
After success with the u-21 side, he will hope to make an argument to take the position on a permanent basis.
England vs Finland – Predicted lineup and team news
England team news
England are without several senior stars for this month’s fixtures with Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden among the high-profile absentees from the squad.
The big names missing from the selection has handed opportunities to Morgan Gibbs-White and Angel Gomes, each of whom have impressed under Carsley at u-21 level.
Gibbs-White and Gomes made their England debuts as late substitutes against Ireland and will be hoping for more involvement at Wembley on Tuesday evening.
Noni Madueke and Tino Livramento are the other uncapped players included in this month’s squad and will be desperate to make their international bows this evening.
Jack Grealish bounced back from his disappointment at missing Euro 2024 to impress in Ireland, as the Manchester City midfielder shone in a central role.
On the scoresheet, he was a standout performer at the Aviva Stadium having been granted a licence to roam across the pitch.
There was also an eye-catching display from Trent Alexander-Arnold, who returned to a right-back role.
The Liverpool defender had struggled to convince Southgate but was an influential performer in Carsley’s first game in charge. In the absence of Kyle Walker from the current squad, he will hope to cement his place in the new manager’s plans.
Tuesday’s clash with Finland is also set to see Harry Kane reach another England milestone. Kane is expected to lead the side out on what will be his 100th appearance for the Three Lions as the Bayern Munich forward becomes England’s 10th centurion. He has scored a record-breaking 66 goals in his 99 caps to date.
