Manchester United make the long trip to the south coast to face Southampton on Saturday lunchtime.
Erik ten Hag will be demanding a response from his squad after successive Premier League defeats that have increased the pressure on his position. The Red Devils were humbled at home to Liverpool before the international break, losing 3-0 at Old Trafford in a performance that saw familiar flaws resurface.
The onus will be on Ten Hag’s team to show improvement, following another sizeable investment in new signings this summer. This weekend’s return to Premier League action involves a trip to St Mary’s, to face a Southampton side without a point since promotion last season.
Ten Hag has overseen victories in each of the six games on the road against the league’s promoted sides since his arrival in English football. Under fire, he needs that record to continue.

Manuel Ugarte was not registered in time to feature against Liverpool after his deadline day arrival from Paris Saint-Germain, but could make his debut this weekend. Calls for the 23-year-old’s inclusion are expected to be loud following Casemiro’s calamitous performance before the international break. The Brazilian was hooked at half-time after being at fault for two goals and replaced by Toby Collyer.
Ten Hag has suggested Ugarte will take time to get up to speed, though the midfielder featured – and impressed – for Uruguay during the international break. Fellow signings Joshua Zirkzee and Matthijs de Ligt have also had gradual introductions to the side. De Ligt will want to bounce back from a poor performance on international duty this month, after two errors led to goals during the Netherlands’ Nations League clash with Bosnia.

Amad Diallo is pushing for a return having been surprisingly dropped to the bench for the Liverpool contest. Named as Manchester United’s Player of the Month for August, he produced a lively cameo off the bench.
Leny Yoro remains out with a broken foot, though Rasmus Hojlund and Luke Shaw are understood to be nearing returns. Hojlund has not featured this season due to a hamstring injury picked up in pre-season, while a club statement on Shaw’s condition suggested the left-back could return after September’s international break.
