Chelsea vs Barrow – Predicted lineup and team news

Chelsea welcome fourth-tier Barrow to Stamford Bridge in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening.

Enzo Maresca will be expected to use the full depth of his expensively-assembled squad, with several names hoping for a chance to impress at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are aiming to continue the momentum of Saturday’s comfortable 3-0 win at West Ham, against a Barrow team who have reached this stage of the League Cup for just the third time – and first since 1967.

There are 64 places between the teams in English football’s pyramid, the biggest gap between two opponents in the third round. However, Chelsea will be wary of an upset against a Barrow side who currently sit top of League Two and are pushing for promotion.

Chelsea team news

Chelsea will ring the changes from their weekend win at West Ham as the Blues look to use the wealth of options at their disposal.

Filip Jorgensen is expected to replace Robert Sanchez in goal with Maresca having confirmed the summer signing from Villarreal will feature for the West Londoners in cup and continental competition this season.

A number of the club’s recent recruits will also hope for an opportunity after limited action in a Chelsea shirt so far. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Tosin Adarabioyo, Renato Veiga and Joao Felix are among the summer arrivals who could be handed a chance to impress.

Romeo Lavia is closing in on a first-team return following his latest setback, though has been ruled out. Malo Gusto is available to return from a hamstring issue.

Mykhailo Mudryk should start and Maresca has demanded more from the winger, who has lost his place in the first team this season. The Ukraine international has failed to live up to expectations since his arrival from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023.

“I don’t think it’s a lack of confidence,” Maresca said ahead of the Carabao Cup match. “Misha is Misha, you have to accept the way he is. Hopefully he can get minutes and do better.”

When asked if the Barrow match was important for Mudryk, he added: “It’s important for him but it’s important for all of the rest. The other players, they are players that train every day very well, but unfortunately I cannot give them a chance.”
