Postecoglou wants Tottenham win to be the standard

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has said his side’s 3-0 win at Manchester United was ‘everything we want to be’.

Spurs produced a superb performance to dismantle Manchester United at Old Trafford, with Brennan Johnson’s opener – following a wonderful solo assist from Micky van de Ven – setting the tone for a statement result.

The North London side were aggressive out of possession and slick in it over the opening period, before Bruno Fernandes’ red card for the home side reemphasised their control.

Dejan Kulusevski scored a second just moments into the second half and Dominic Solanke completed the rout with a close-range third from a set piece.

Postecoglou was delighted with the performance from his team who notched up a fourth win in a row in all competitions. The Australian said he wants their display at Old Trafford to be the benchmark moving forward.

“We were real good. Obviously it is a great victory. I thought the manner of the performance, we played our football really aggressively. That is everything we want to be,” Postecoglou said speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live.

“I could see the boys’ attitude, they were not dwelling on missed chances. I knew the goals would come. We should have probably had a couple more.”

Van de Ven discusses audacious assist

Van de Ven’s surging solo run kickstarted the win and the Dutch defender backed his manager’s stance that Spurs can reach these levels on a consistent basis.

“We controlled the game, we knew the danger of their counter attacks but our rest defence was good. For the goal, I intercepted the ball, I saw the gap and I knew I could get going,” Van de Ven said to Sky Sports.

“I know Brennan Johnson is always at the second post so I hit it hard, I couldn’t see the ball go in as I fell down the slope but I heard the away fans.

“This is a tough game at Old Trafford. Performance wise we had started the season well but we needed a win and this is an important three points. We have the quality to play with this intensity in every game.”
