Guardiola hails ‘outstanding’ Manchester City as Stones snatches Wolves win

Pep Guardiola praised an ‘outstanding’ performance from Manchester City after his side beat Wolves 2-1 to move top of the Premier League table.

The Citizens snatched the points deep into stoppage-time when John Stones headed in from a set-piece, with the England international celebrating his second last-gasp goal of the campaign.

Guardiola’s side were forced to come from behind at Molineux, after Jorgen Strand Larsen opened the scoring for Wolves inside seven minutes. The Norwegian converted from Nelson Semedo’s inviting cross as Wolves hit City on the counter early on.

Josko Gvardiol found an equaliser for the champions before half-time, when the Croatian added another stunning strike to his catalogue. Afforded room to shoot, the full-back’s finish arced over Jose Sa and into the top corner.

Wolves defended in large numbers and looked set to earn just their second point of the Premier League campaign, until Stones snatched the points late on for the visitors.

The goal was given following a VAR check. Initially disallowed on-field, VAR deemed Bernardo Silva wasn’t in the line of vision and had no impact on the goalkeeper.

Guardiola was delighted with the spirit his side showed to claim an important three points on the road.

“We are not a team that win games right at the end but the performance there was outstanding,” he told Sky Sports.

“We have a lot of players with quality up front, but a lot of players in the box is difficult. They are aggressive, strong. We played really good to have the chances we had. The players who came in were unbelievable and to win that way feels good.

“11 players in the 18 yard box is difficult, but the composure from everyone. We lost here last season, they were less active but I saw them against Liverpool and Chelsea.

“We have been in that position, when you lose at the end. But this is the game. Both sides try to do their best. They had a game plan and I am so proud. We played the way we want to play and it is a joy to be here, to score in the last 50 seconds and go top of the league.”
