Lee Carsley has outlined what he believes Curtis Jones can bring to England and says the Liverpool midfielder is one of the best he has coached.
Jones has been included in the squad to face Greece and the Republic of Ireland later this month, with the 24-year-old in line for an England debut. The midfielder was part of the squad for October’s international break but withdrew to attend the birth of his first child.
Carsley has recalled Jones for this month’s fixtures after a strong run of form at club level. Having worked with Jones at u-21 level, Carsley is confident he has what it takes to thrive in the senior set-up. He praised Jones’ ‘all-round’ game and believes the midfielder is ‘one of the best’ he’s worked with ‘in terms of ability’.
“Curtis is an all-round player, plays in various positions. He is a player I highly rate, he’s one of the best I’ve worked with in terms of ability,” Carsley said at a press conference to announce his final England squad.
“He is showing consistency at a high level now. He can score goals, assist and is player we’ve had a lot of success with in the past.”
Carsley’s reign as interim boss will end after this month’s games with Thomas Tuchel to take over in the New Year. He believes the German is a great appointment for the Three Lions.
“My focus has always been on the games. I’ve been respected and left to get on with the job. I’m really comfortable in the position.
“I think it’s a really good appointment. We talked about getting a coach with a proven track record and Thomas has that. I’m looking forward to watching him work and handing over a strong group of players with potential to win a major tournament to him.”
