Final African Player of the Year shortlist revealed with big names missing

The list of nominees for this year’s African Men’s Player of the Year award has been whittled down to just five names.

Former Everton and Fulham winger Ademola Lookman has made the shortlist following a brilliant year with Atalanta, for whom he scored a hat-trick in the Europa League final in May. He also played a starring role for Nigeria as they reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles lost the decider to the Ivory Coast, whose sole representative on the list is Brighton attacker Simon Adingra.

Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy unsurprisingly makes the cut after scoring 30 goals in 30 games for Stuttgart last season

PSG and Morocco right-back Achraf Hakimi and Ronwen Williams of Mamelodi Sundowns and South Africa have also been nominated.

CAF caused consternation last month when their initial list of nominees omitted the likes of Liverpool‘s Mo Salah, Victor Osimhen of Napoli, Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson, West Ham winger Mohammed Kudus and Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface.
