Amorim to demand ‘final say’ on Man United transfers

Ruben Amorim has said he wants the ‘final say’ when it comes to recruitment at Manchester United.

Amorim has officially started his reign as Manchester United manager and will oversee his first game when the Red Devils travel to Ipswich this weekend.

The 39-year-old has had huge success in Portugal, where he led Sporting Lisbon to two Primeira Liga titles – in the process ending a 19-year drought for the Portuguese title.

Amorim has favoured a flexible system that uses three central defenders and has confirmed he plans to continue with that formation at Old Trafford. He has said the final decision on recruitment is vital to success, given his style of football.

United have endured a poor recent record in the transfer market, with only Chelsea having invested more than their £547.96m net over the last five seasons. The Red Devils have not won the title since 2012/13 and are currently 13th in the Premier League table.

“This is a football club that will be here for a long time. You have to work with everyone together, we have to improve the process of recruitment.

“I want to have a strong position on that because of how I want to play. It should be together but I think the manager should get the final say. When everything is aligned, we can buy and sell players.

“I have a great responsibility when we choose players because that is something that should be done in this way, I should be able to choose the players.”

Amorim outlines belief in chosen playing style

Asked on the way his team will set-up this weekend, Amorim added: “As a coach, you have to choose one way or another. I always, 100%, [do it] our way. I prefer to risk but push in the first moment.

“Since the first moment, I believe so much in our way of playing, there’s no second way. We will adapt some players because we don’t have the right profiles as this squad was set up for a different system. When you see the team on Sunday, it will be similar players, but in the game it will be different.”
