Guardiola discusses chance of heavy spending in January window

Pep Guardiola has talked down the prospect of Manchester City spending heavily in the January transfer window.

City are enduring a torrid run of form and have won just once in their last 10 games across all competitions. Guardiola has suggested his ageing squad is in need of additions, while the Citizens are in a strong financial position to strengthen.

The Premier League champions posted a £73m profit for the 2023/24 financial year this week, following a profit in the transfer market that included the sales of Cole Palmer, Aymeric Laporte and Riyad Mahrez.

A year earlier, City banked £80m profit with Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko among the high-profile names to leave, alongside a wealth of academy talent for sizeable fee.

The Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations (PSR) allow clubs to lose £105m over a three-year period, leaving City with huge leeway to invest. With influential midfielder Rodri sidelined for the campaign with an ACL injury, City have been linked with signing a replacement when the window opens next month.

However, Guardiola has said his only focus is on getting his injured players back to fitness, insisting the squad that started the season is strong enough to compete.

“What I want is my players back. The complete squad we had at the beginning of the season. My regret is that we don’t we have these and not needing new ones,” he said at his pre-match press conference ahead of this weekend’s Manchester Derby.

“Massive congratulations on the accounts because the club must be sustainable. That doesn’t mean we have big, big resources to buy whatever we want, especially with how expensive the transfer market is.”
