Amorim convinced Man United have ‘ingredients’ for success

Ruben Amorim has said he remains convinced that Manchester United have the ‘ingredients’ for success despite a tough start to his reign.

Manchester United host in-form Newcastle in the Premier League this evening, aiming to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions. The optimism that greeted Amorim’s arrival last month has subsided with familiar flaws exposed in recent games.

United lost 2-0 at Wolves on Boxing Day and sit 14th in the Premier League table – just eight points above the relegation places.

Speaking to the United Review ahead of the visit of Newcastle, Amorim said his belief that better days are coming has not been dented. The 39-year-old has said there will be ‘short-term costs’ to reach the club’s long-term aims but remains convinced the club have the ingredients required for success.

“If we are to make the long-term changes that we want to make to Manchester United, then we have to go through that step by step,” the Portuguese boss said.

“We are looking to implement a new way of playing, at the busiest time of the year, so there are short-term costs for our long-term aims.

“I will say, though, that the players are working hard to take on and use all the new information and instructions they are getting. The longer they do this, the easier it will become for them, and then the comfort and confidence in our game will grow.

“I have seen enough in the last few weeks to recognise that we have many of the ingredients we need for success, and I remain as convinced as I was on my first day here that we will achieve it.”
