Real Madrid set to rival Premier League clubs for Zubimendi

Real Madrid are ready to rival Premier League clubs in the race to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.

Zubimendi turned down a transfer to Liverpool in the summer but remains a target for English clubs.

Arne Slot’s remain interested in a deal should the Spaniard’s stance change, despite the emergence of Ryan Gravenberch in defensive midfield. Arsenal and Manchester City have also been linked of late. The latter are keen to bring in midfield reinforcements in the January transfer window following Rodri’s season-ending injury.

However, Spanish outlet AS are reporting that Real Madrid have now entered the race for his services. Zubimendi’s consistent performances for their divisional rivals have alerted the Spanish and European champions.

Having failed to sign a replacement for Toni Kroos in the summer, Zubimendi has been placed on the wish list of head coach Carlo Ancelotti. An underwhelming start to the season at Real Madrid has heightened the need for a Kroos replacement, following the German’s retirement from football. With Luka Modric also now 39, plans are being put together to add to the engine room in 2025.

Zubimendi, who formed part of Spain’s success at Euro 2024 in the summer, has a release clause of €60m in his contract. He has ignored offers from leading clubs in favour of remaining at his boyhood side but is now understood to be reconsidering his options. He has made 208 first-team appearances since progressing from the club’s youth system in San Sebastien.

Zubimendi ranks among La Liga’s top players this season for passes into the final third (9th), progressive passes (4th), tackles (8th) and percentage of aerial duels won (8th).
