Spurs set to seal Tel signing ahead of Man United

Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with Bayern Munich to sign Mathys Tel on loan.

The French forward is on his way to London to finalise a loan move to the Premier League ahead of Monday’s 11pm deadline.

Tel turned down a permanent transfer to Spurs last week but has now accepted a loan move to the club. No buy option has been included in the agreement.

The 19-year-old has been keen to leave Bayern in search of regular first-team football, having started just twice in the Bundesliga this season. The presence of former Tottenham forward Harry Kane has restricted his minutes.

Tel enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season, scoring seven goals and providing five assists in the Bundesliga despite limited involvement. He averaged a Bundesliga goal involvement every 86 minutes.

Ange Postecoglou has been keen to bring in further firepower with Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson currently sidelined. Tel can operate across the forward line and will bring much needed depth to a depleted Spurs squad.

Manchester United had appeared frontrunners to secure a deal but failed to reach an agreement with Bayern. Arsenal and Chelsea also expressed interest in signing Tel, though Spurs are set to complete a deal.

He will become the club’s third signing of the winter window, after Antonin Kinsky and Kevin Danso. Spurs are also chasing another centre-back and have seen a £70m bid for Marc Guehi rejected by Crystal Palace.
