We are only in early March, but we’ve already got one of, if not the best goal you will see in 2025.
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, while everyone in the UK was sound asleep, a football match that virtually no one on this side of the world would have been aware of was taking place in Mexico.
Tigres UANL’s women’s team were hosting Chivas Guadalajara at the Estadio Universitario, hoping to overtake their rivals in the Liga MX Feminil standings.
The game, played out before a small crowd, was scoreless as the game entered the 75th minute. But that was about to change in spectacular fashion.
Lizbeth Ovalle ran onto a weak cross, but she made the most out of it, counterintuitively twisting her body to face away from the goal and flick the ball on with a scorpion kick.
The ball looped high in the air, leaving the goalkeeper rooted to the spot as it floated into the far side netting. This writer’s words cannot do it justice; it simply needs to be seen to be believed.
La locura de gol de @lizbethovalle7.

It’s one of the most incredible finishes we have ever seen. But wait! There’s more! Tigres posted the goal from another angle, which looks even better than it did from the hard camera.

It will take something truly remarkable to beat it for this year’s Marta Award, given to the best goal scored by a female player at Fifa’s annual The Best Awards.
Ovalle’s sensational score was followed up moments later by a goal from teammate Jhennifer, handing Tigres a 2-0 win to see them move up to fourth in the table.
