Chelsea have released a nostalgia-packed video as the club celebrate 120 years since their formation.
On this day in 1905, Gus Mears founded a new club in West London as Chelsea Football Club was born. Having purchased the then-Stamford Bridge athletics stadium with the ambition to turn it into a football venue, Chelsea were created.
Over the next 120 years, the Blues would become one of English football’s superpowers. The club’s first league title arrived in 1955, before a clutch of cup successes in the late nineties and early 2000s marked an exciting era for the West Londoners.
Chelsea’s fortunes forever transformed in 2003, following the purchase of the club by Roman Abramovich. The Russian billionaire turned Chelsea into a global power with the Blues having earned the bulk of their success this century.
Six-time winners of England’s top flight with five in the Premier League era, the club’s honours also include eight FA Cup triumphs and five League Cup successes.
Chelsea are also the only club in history to have won the “European Treble” of the European Cup/Champions League, European/UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, and UEFA Cup/Europa League twice.
This season, Chelsea could become the first club to have won the UEFA quartet with Enzo Mareca’s side favourites for the newly-formed Europa Conference League.
