Van Dijk says ‘there’s going to be news’ on Liverpool future

Virgil van Dijk has reiterated his commitment to Liverpool and has insisted there will be news on his future before the end of the season.

Van Dijk’s current contract expires in the summer and there has been no announcement on an extension.

The Dutch defender is one of three high-profile players whose futures are yet to be decided at Anfield. Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold will also become free agents in the summer as things stand.

Van Dijk has enjoyed another impressive campaign at Liverpool, who sit 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League. He ranks fourth in the division for aerial duels won and fifth for percentage of aerial battles won (71.2%). Earlier this week, Liverpool manager Arne Slot said he wants to keep the 33-year-old on Merseyside next season.

“I don’t know what is happening next season as well… in terms of results. But that’s not what you mean…” Slot said.

“The only thing I know is that I want Virgil to be here next season. All the rest, these talks about contracts, that is not what I do here.”

Speaking after Liverpool’s defeat to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, Van Dijk said there would be imminent news on his future.

“Before the end of the season there’s going to be news.

“As long as I’m full committed and have my full focus on the task ahead, and I love the club, that’s the main thing. That’s who I am.”
