Cole Palmer pulls out of England squad as Chelsea injury blow confirmed

Cole Palmer has left the England squad due to a muscle injury, Chelsea have confirmed. 

The playmaker was left out of the Blues’ matchday squad for Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Arsenal after failing a fitness test. Prior to that he had been dealing with illness.

Following the London derby Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca revealed that Palmer had been dealing with a muscular problem he sustained during Saturday’s pre-match training session.

The 22-year-old joined the England squad at St George’s Park after being called up for Thomas Tuchel’s first matches in charge of the Three Lions, but he has left the camp to return to Chelsea.

“Cole Palmer has returned to Chelsea from the England camp following the injury he sustained in training on Saturday,” read a Chelsea statement.

“Palmer did not feature in Sunday’s defeat at Arsenal because of what Enzo Maresca described as a muscular problem sustained in the build-up to the game.

“Palmer will miss the Three Lions’ upcoming World Cup qualifiers at home to Albania and Latvia and instead continue his recovery at Cobham.

“Reece James and Levi Colwill are now the Chelsea representatives in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.”
