Atletico insist Alvarez not for sale amid Liverpool links

Atletico Madrid sporting director Carlos Busero has insisted Julian Alvarez is not for sale amid links to Liverpool.

Alvarez has impressed during his debut season with Atletico after joining the club from Manchester City last summer. The Argentina international has scored 23 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions to fire Atleti into La Liga title contention.

Liverpool are understood to have considered an approach for Alvarez last summer, before his £81.8m move to the Spanish capital. He is understood to remain on the Reds’ shortlist as the club contemplate a centre-forward signing this summer.

The futures of Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota are uncertain at Anfield with the forward duo having struggled for form and fitness this season. Nunez has failed to live up to expectations since his £64m arrival from Benfica in 2022 and was linked with an exit during the January transfer window.

Jota, meanwhile, has not started more than 15 league games in any of the last three seasons. The Portugal international struggled to make an impact from the start as Liverpool lost successive games to Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United last week.

However, any approach for Alvarez is set to be turned down. Discussing the player’s future, Busero told 365scores that Atletico have no intention of entertaining offers. He insisted that the 25-year-old is a key part of the Spanish side’s long-term plans.

“Alvarez is a key and important player in our project, and we have no intention of letting him go. The player himself is not paying attention to these rumours.”
