Harry Maguire has been linked with a shock move to Chelsea as Manchester United consider using the defender as a makeweight in a deal for Mason Mount.
Maguire is expected to leave Manchester United this summer after falling out of favour under Erik ten Hag with the centre-back having made just seven starts in the Premier League last season.
Ten Hag admitted that the 30-year-old ‘has a decision to make’ on his future this summer, while Gareth Southgate admitted Maguire’s place with England is under threat if the defender does not secure more regular football.
According to The Sun, United could look to offer Maguire to Chelsea as part of a deal to sign Mason Mount. United have been linked with the England international in recent weeks, with reports suggesting they have even agreed personal terms with the 24-year-old, though are yet to come to an agreement with Chelsea.
The Blues are said to value the midfielder at around £70m and the Red Devils are ‘some distance’ from agreeing a fee with the west Londoners.
It is hoped that the offer of Maguire – valued at around £30m – could aid the club’s bid for Mount, with Mauricio Pochettino having previously tried to sign Maguire from Hull during his time as Tottenham manager.
Given Chelsea’s abundance of central defensive options and Maguire’s age, high wages and poor recent form, it remains to be seen whether the surprise suggestion would be considered at Stamford Bridge.
