Aston Villa join race to sign Harry Maguire

Aston Villa have joined Tottenham and West Ham in the race to sign Harry Maguire from Manchester United.

Maguire looks set to leave Manchester United this summer after falling out of favour this season, with the club captain restricted to just eight Premier League starts under Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag last month said that the centre-back ‘had a decision to make’ on his future at the club, while Gareth Southgate warned Maguire that his England place was under threat unless the defender secures more regular first-team football.

Maguire has effectively been fifth-choice at Manchester United this season, with Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof established ahead of the defender in Ten Hag’s plans. Luke Shaw has also been selected ahead of Maguire in a central role on occasion.

Spurs and West Ham have been linked with the 30-year-old and Football Insider are reporting that Aston Villa are also interested. Unai Emery is set to be handed around £150m to improve his squad this summer, following the club’s qualification for the Europa Conference League.

Emery has made the signing of a centre-back a focus for Villa in the upcoming transfer window and the club have also been linked with Manchester City’s Aymeric Laporte and Villarreal’s Pau Torres.
