Guardiola says Treble win was ‘written in the stars’ for Man City

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City’s treble win was ‘written in the stars’ after the club beat Inter Milan to win the Champions League for the first time.

City beat Inter Milan 1-0 to win a first Champions League title at the Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul, with Rodri scoring the decisive goal after firing home a fine finish from just inside the area.

City had to deal with the setback of losing Kevin De Bruyne to a first-half injury, but remained patient as the club sought to break down an organised Inter side. Rodri found the breakthrough, before City survived late scares as Federico Dimarco and Romelu Lukaku came close to equalisers for Inter.

The club’s maiden European triumph added to the Premier League and FA Cup trophies already won this season and City have become just the second English team, after Manchester United in 1998/99, to win all three competitions in the same campaign.

For Guardiola it was a long-awaited triumph in the Champions League as the Spaniard won the competition for a third time, having lifted the trophy with Barcelona in 2009 and 2011.

“I’m tired, calm and satisfied. It’s so difficult to win,” Guardiola said, as per the BBC.

“It was written in the stars. It belongs to us.”

Guardiola’s side have joined Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United team of the late nineties in the history books and the Spaniard said it was ‘an honour’ to match that achievement with Treble success.

“It is an honour for me to be alongside Sir Alex Ferguson. I got a message from him this morning and it is an honour,” added Guardiola.

“People say I have to win trebles every season. I am a good manager, but no. I like this competition for the fact we won it, it is part of history and players will be remembered for the rest of their lives.

“But now give credit for the five Premier Leagues won in six years. It is important now that people don’t forget what we have done. Maybe they can create a museum so the fans can look at the trophies.”
