Newcastle aim to add Maddison and McTominay to midfield options

Newcastle want to add Leicester’s James Maddison and Manchester United’s Scott McTominay to the club’s midfield options.

Eddie Howe is preparing to add to his squad ahead of Newcastle’s return to the Champions League next season and has made midfield additions the focus ahead of the summer transfer window.

Maddison has been a long-term target for the Magpies and was subject of a failed approach from Newcastle last summer, with the club set to renew efforts to sign the 26-year-old after Leicester’s relegation from the Premier League.

Tottenham have also been credited with interest in Maddison, whose form has seen the midfielder recalled to the England squad under Gareth Southgate.

Maddison scored 10 goals and laid on another nine assists for Leicester despite the club’s relegation and is valued at around £40m at the King Power Stadium.

The Northern Echo are reporting that Maddison is the club’s only transfer target from the relegated Foxes, despite links to team-mate Harvey Barnes.

Newcastle are also interested in a deal to sign McTominay from Manchester United. The Scotland international struggled for regular minutes last season after the arrival of Casmeiro and has been linked with an exit. The 26-year-old was restricted to just 10 Premier League starts under Erik ten Hag last season.
