Manchester United are set to make a formal approach for Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo, who is valued in excess of £80m.
Caicedo is a transfer target for the Premier League’s leading clubs after an outstanding season for the Seagulls, with the 21-year-old emerging as one of the best ball-winning midfielders in the division at the Amex Stadium.
United are keen to sign a midfielder this summer and have been in negotiations with Chelsea over a deal for Mason Mount, but have seen three offers turned down for the England international.
The Red Devils are now willing to consider alternatives if Chelsea’s stance does not change and Sky Sports are reporting that Erik ten Hag’s team will make a formal approach for Caicedo after initial contact with Brighton last week.
Chelsea are also interested in a deal for Caicedo, who ranked second in the Premier League for both tackles and interceptions last season. Brighton turned down bids from Chelsea and Arsenal in January and value the Ecuadorian at around £80m.
United have a long-standing interest in the midfielder and considered a move for Caicedo in January 2021, when he was playing for Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle.
United had also considered renewing their interest in Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot, before the Frenchman signed a new one-year contract extension in Turin this week.
