Inter Milan are reportedly willing to meet Manchester United ‘halfway’ as the clubs look to do a deal for Andre Onana.
As it stands, Dean Henderson and Tom Heaton are Manchester United’s only senior goalkeepers after David de Gea became a free agent this week following the expiry of his contract.
The Spaniard has been offered a new deal to remain at Old Trafford, albeit on significantly lower wages than he has been collecting, while his place as first-choice ‘keeper is in doubt.
It has been reported that Erik ten Hag has doubts as to whether the 30-year-old can adapt to his preferred style of play, with the United number one having been criticised for his ability with the ball at his feet.
United have been linked with a number of more progressive goalkeepers in recent months, including Diogo Costa, David Raya, and Andre Onana, with the latter having worked with Ten Hag at Ajax before joining Inter Milan last summer.
Onana impressed both in possession and in between the sticks during Inter Milan’s run to the Champions League final, with Inter Milan CEO, Beppe Marotta, confirming that Manchester United have expressed an interest in the Cameroon international.
“Manchester United have expressed an interest which may or may not lead to an offer in the next few days,” Marotta said.
“Once that happens, both Inter and the player will carefully assess it.”
Inter Milan are reported to want at least €60 million (£51.5) for Onana, though United are operating on a restricted budget of around £120m this summer and have already agreed to shell out £55m for the signing of Mason Mount.
Manchester United are yet to submit an official bid for Onana despite ‘constant contacts’ with Inter, and according to Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport, the San Siro-based outfit would be willing to ‘meet halfway’ between United’s valuation of around €50m (£43m) plus bonuses in order to get a deal done.
It would represent a huge profit for the Italian side who signed the 27-year-old on a free transfer last summer, with the Champions League finalists having already identified Shakhtar Donetsk’s Anatoliy Trubin as a potential replacement.
