Arsenal reach ‘full agreement’ with Ajax for Jurrien Timber

Arsenal have reached a ‘full agreement’ with Ajax over the transfer of defender Jurrien Timber.

Arsenal have been in negotiations with Ajax over a deal to sign Timber and have now reached an agreement worth €40million (£34.3m) plus €5m (£4.3m) in ‘largely realistic’ add-ons.

The Gunners saw an opening bid worth £30m turned down last month, but The Athletic are reporting that a fee has now been agreed. Timber has been granted permission to travel to north London to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms ahead of a move to the Premier League.

The breakthrough will be a major boost to Mikel Arteta who has been active in the transfer market to strengthen his squad. Kai Havertz has completed a £65m move from Chelsea, while Arsenal are close to finalising the £105m club-record transfer of Declan Rice from West Ham United.

Timber arrives with a fine reputation after progressing from the academy system at Ajax. The 22-year-old has made 121 appearances for the Dutch side and was named as the Eredivisie’s Player of the Season during Ajax’s title-winning campaign in 2021/22.

Timber has won 15 caps for the Netherlands at international level and will improve Arsenal’s centre-back options ahead of the club’s Champions League return.
