Maguire ‘angry, shocked and upset’ over being stripped of Man United captaincy

Harry Maguire has been left ‘angry, shocked and upset’ after being informed that he has been removed as club captain of Manchester United.

Maguire took to social media to reveal Erik ten Hag’s decision to choose new captain ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign, with the defender stripped of the armband after struggling for status last season.

The centre-back made just eight Premier League starts and has been linked with an exit this summer, though The Sun are reporting that the decision to take the captaincy from him has left Maguire ‘shocked’.

The England international is now ready to leave the club after a decision which made clear his place in Ten Hag’s plans and a number of Premier League clubs are understood to be interested in a potential deal.

United have not made an announcement on a new captain, though Bruno Fernandes is considered to be the frontrunner to replace Maguire having captained the side in his absence last season.

Maguire lost his place in the team after the Red Devils opened the campaign with back-to-back defeats and struggled to regain favour under Ten Hag, who preferred left-back Luke Shaw in a central defensive role ahead of the 30-year-old on occasion.

Ten Hag’s decision on the captaincy has reemphasised Maguire’s status at Old Trafford and a departure appears likely before the conclusion of the transfer window.
