Man United emerge as ‘serious contenders’ to sign Xavi Simons

Manchester United have emerged as serious contenders to sign Xavi Simons on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.

Simons is set to rejoin PSG just one season after leaving the club for PSV Eindhoven, with the Ligue 1 champions having activated a bargain buy-back clause worth just £5m.

The 20-year-old starred during an excellent season in the Eredivise with the midfielder scoring 19 league goals and providing nine assists to break into the Dutch national side.

Simons ended the campaign as the joint-leading scorer in the Dutch top-flight alongside Utrecht’s Anastasios Douvikas and will now rejoin PSG in a cut-price deal, though the midfielder is expected to depart on loan in search of a regular role.

RB Leipzig have been strongly linked with signing Simons, though L’Equipe are reporting that Manchester United have emerged as serious contenders for his signature.

Erik ten Hag is keen to reinforce his midfield and forward line this summer and Simons’ ability to operate in a number of advanced roles will appeal to the Red Devils manager.

United are working on a restricted transfer budget this summer and the loan arrival of Simons could allow the club to focus funds on other areas of the squad.
