Liverpool have agreed a £110m British transfer record fee with Brighton to sign midfielder Moises Caicedo.
Caicedo is set to travel to Liverpool to undergo a medical on Friday after the Reds outbid long-time suitors Chelsea to agree a deal. The fee is £110m, eclipsing the £106.8m figure that Chelsea paid to sign Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in January as the most expensive signing in Premier League history.
Liverpool turned to Caicedo after having three bids for Southampton teenager Romeo Lavia rejected and submitted their record offer ahead of Brighton’s Thursday night deadline. The Seagulls had wanted a deal agreed before their Premier League season opener at home to Luton on Saturday.
The 21-year-old has been one of the most in-demand names of the summer transfer window, following a brilliant season as Brighton secured Europa League qualification.
Caicedo ranked second in the Premier League for both tackles and interceptions last season and became a top target for Liverpool after the sales of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.
Personal terms have already been agreed with Liverpool and the midfielder will hold further talks with Jurgen Klopp on Friday morning.
Sky Sports are reporting that Chelsea had been willing to pay £100m for Caicedo, while Bayern Munich were also interested and prepared to spend £90m on the Ecuador international.
