Virgil van Dijk is hopeful that Liverpool can make more additions before the transfer deadline after the Reds opened their Premier League campaign with a 1-1 draw at Chelsea.
Liverpool opened the scoring at Stamford Bridge when Luis Diaz turned home from Mohamed Salah’s brilliant pass, but a debut goal from Axel Disasi earned Chelsea a well-deserved point in west London.
Jurgen Klopp’s side dominated the opening period but faded in the second half, managing just one shot on target as Chelsea carved out the better opportunities.
Both sides also saw goals disallowed for offside and Van Dijk admitted the game could have gone either way.
“We want to make things right. We had a very good 20-25 minutes, with and without the ball, and scored a good goal. After the disallowed goal they came into it,” the Liverpool captain told BBC Match of the Day.
“We defended quite well in my opinion. It is not easy. Overall it was a very good game that could have gone either way. We take the point.”
Van Dijk was pleased with the performances of new signings Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister after the midfield duo made their debuts for the Reds, but is hopeful Liverpool can add further reinforcements before the transfer deadline.
“Very good,” Van Dijk said on the performances of Liverpool’s debutants.
“I am very impressed with the guys, as a human being coming to a new club, it is good how they are coming in. Our group is a very family friendly club.
“On the pitch their quality spoke for itself. I am very happy with them, the transfer window is not closed yet so let’s see if we can make a couple more additions to make the squad as strong as possible this season.”
