Newcastle consider Tierney and Cucurella as left-back options

Newcastle want to sign a left-back before the transfer deadline and are considering moves for Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney and Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella.

Eddie Howe remains keen to add to his squad as Newcastle prepare to compete in the Champions League this season and is targeting reinforcements at left-back.

The Magpies are long-term admirers of Tierney, who made just six Premier League starts last season after losing his place in the Arsenal team to Oleksandr Zinchenko.

A number of clubs are understood to have approached Arsenal regarding a deal, including Spanish side Real Sociedad and former club Celtic, but Arsenal’s £30m valuation has so far proven prohibitive to a deal.

The Newcastle Chronicle are reporting that Newcastle have been ‘kept in the loop’ regarding Tierney’s future and could renew their interest in the 26-year-old before the deadline.

According to the Telegraph, Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella is also under consideration. The Spaniard struggled during a difficult debut season at Chelsea last term, having joined the west Londoners from Brighton for a fee of £62m.

He was an unused substitute during Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday and the presence of Ben Chilwell – alongside return of Levi Colwill from a loan spell at Brighton – leaves Cucurella facing a fight for a first-team place.

Newcastle are exploring loan moves for both players as the club look to ‘navigate FFP concerns’.
