Manuel Akanji is confident that Manchester City can continue a ‘great year’ by winning the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday evening.
The European champions take on Europa League winners Sevilla in Athens this evening, as the two teams contest the annual Super Cup in the Greek capital.
For City, it is another chance to add to their silverware cabinet and an opportunity win the trophy for the first time, after treble success under Pep Guardiola last season.
Akanji is looking forward to the occasion and is hopeful that the Citizens can enjoy more success, after winning a historic treble during his debut campaign at the Etihad.
“It’s been a great year,” he said in his pre-match press conference.
“I didn’t expect this when I signed but as soon as I came here, the mentality was to win everything and I’m so happy to do it like this.
“I hope we can win more trophies.
“Just being around all these good players and the coaching staff is helping me improve every day. That is my goal. I try to do the best I can. Every day I try to do the best I can.”
Wednesday’s clash will be the first time that City have contested the UEFA Super Cup and Akanji admits the squad are ‘excited’ for the occasion.
“It’s another final,” he said.
“A possibility to win another trophy.
“We are really excited for the game and we will do everything to win it. That’s the mindset in our team, we want to win every game and that’s what we will try to do tomorrow again.”
