Newcastle were given a reality check after losing at Manchester City at the weekend, a reminder of the gap that still exists between the improving Magpies and the Premier League’s best side. Liverpool are unbeaten in their two fixtures to date, but issues remain in midfield and Jurgen Klopp could be tempted to throw in new signing Wataru Endo for a baptism of fire at St James’ Park.
Liverpool were the only team to do the double over Newcastle last season and are unbeaten since December 2015 against this weekend’s opponents, winning the last four meetings.
