Manchester City are considering a move to sign Matheus Nunes from Wolves as the club look to strengthen their midfield options before the deadline.
City are keen to improve their depth in midfield and had made an offer for West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta, but have since seen the deal collapse over alleged breaches of betting rules against the Brazil international.
The Athletic are reporting that Pep Guardiola has now turned his attention to Nunes, who was linked with Liverpool earlier in the window.
Nunes enjoyed a mixed first season in English football at Wolves, but has been recipient of praise from Guardiola previously and was named by the City boss as ‘one of the best players in the world’ when facing the Cityzens in the Champions League while at Sporting Lisbon.
Wolves are ‘unlikely to welcome City’s interest’ late in the transfer window, but the sale of the midfielder could free funds for new manager Gary O’Neil to bolster his squad before the deadline.
Wolves’ business to date has been limited due to financial fair play issues and the sale of Nunes – signed for a fee of £38m from Sporting – would allow room to manoeuvre in the market.
Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze is named as another potential attacking midfield option for City.
