Liverpool need ‘astronomical fee’ to sign centre-back target

Liverpool would need to make an ‘astronomical’ offer to sign Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Piero Hincapie, according to reports in Germany.

Liverpool have been linked with a move to sign the Ecuadorian in the closing stages of the transfer window, as the Reds look to bring in a left-sided central defender.

Hincapie has emerged as one of Europe’s most promising defenders during his two seasons at Leverkusen, with the 21-year-old having made 76 appearances in all competitions.

Reports this week suggested Liverpool were preparing a bid for Hincapie, but BILD are reporting that the Reds would need to significantly raise their rumoured €45m offer to secure a deal.

The German outlet claim Leverkusen would seek an ‘astronomical fee’ of around €70m (£60m) for the centre-back, who has been an impressive performer under the management of former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso at the Bundesliga side.

The arrival of Hincapie would provide Jurgen Klopp with a natural left-sided centre-back option, should the Liverpool boss continue with the back three system that allows Trent Alexander-Arnold to invert into midfield.

However, Leverkusen are under no pressure to sell following the departure of Moussa Diaby to Aston Villa earlier in the transfer window, while Hincapie is contracted to 2027.
